The Most Decorated Soldier and the Sex Trafficker
Ehud Barak is the most decorated soldier in Israeli military history. He served as Prime Minister of Israel from 1999 to 2001. He also met with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein at least 36 times, according to a Wall Street Journal investigation.[1] The meetings occurred monthly beginning in December 2015, continuing well after Epstein's 2008 guilty plea to state prostitution charges in Florida.
Barak visited Epstein's mansions in Florida, New York, and on his private Caribbean island.[1] In January 2016, the Daily Mail published photographs of Barak entering Epstein's Manhattan townhouse.[2] The former prime minister was not hiding.
The relationship was not merely social. In 2015, Barak created an investment vehicle called Sum (E.B.) 2015 to invest approximately $1 million in Carbyne, an Israeli emergency response technology company. Epstein served as a financial backer of the venture.[2] Emails later revealed that Epstein was using his connection to Barak to seek opportunities in the surveillance technology industry.[6]

Yoni Koren, described as a senior Ehud Barak aide with ties to Israeli military intelligence, made regular stays at Epstein's New York residence.[2] In early 2026, Al Jazeera reported that Israel installed security at Epstein's Manhattan apartment specifically for Barak's visits.[3] Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's most prominent accusers, alleged that Epstein forced her into sexual relations with Barak. Barak has denied the allegation. After Epstein's 2019 re-arrest, Barak stated: "I wish I'd never met him."[1]
Robert Maxwell: The Publisher Buried Like a Head of State
Any examination of the Epstein case inevitably leads to Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted in 2021 of sex trafficking and conspiracy. And any examination of Ghislaine Maxwell leads to her father, Robert Maxwell.
Robert Maxwell was a British media proprietor, a former Member of Parliament, and the owner of the Daily Mirror. He died on November 5, 1991, after falling from his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, off the coast of the Canary Islands. The circumstances of his death remain disputed.
What is not disputed is what happened next. Maxwell was buried on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and President Chaim Herzog attended the funeral. At least six serving or former heads of Israeli intelligence agencies were present.[4] Shamir declared at the ceremony: "He has done more for Israel than can today be said."[4]
That sentence has never been adequately explained.
Ari Ben-Menashe, who claims to have served in Israeli Military Intelligence, has stated that Maxwell was a Mossad agent.[7] Ben-Menashe further claimed that Maxwell tipped off the Israeli embassy about Mordechai Vanunu in 1986, the nuclear technician who leaked details of Israel's weapons program to the British press. Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh used Ben-Menashe as a key source for his 1991 book "The Samson Option," which detailed Israel's nuclear arsenal.[7]
Israeli Prime Minister Shamir declared at Maxwell's funeral: "He has done more for Israel than can today be said." That sentence has never been adequately explained.
A critical caveat: Israeli officials have disputed Ben-Menashe's account, claiming he was a junior translator who was fired in 1987.[7] His credibility as a source remains contested. Ben-Menashe has also claimed Maxwell was assassinated by Mossad for threatening to "expose all he had done" for Israeli intelligence. This allegation is unverified and should be treated as such.
The documented facts are these: Maxwell received a funeral attended by multiple heads of Israeli intelligence; the Israeli Prime Minister publicly credited him with unspecified service to the state; and his daughter became Jeffrey Epstein's most important accomplice.
The FBI Memo and the Blackmail Question
In October 2020, an FBI memo surfaced reporting that a source believed Epstein was a "co-opted Mossad agent" who was "trained as a spy."[7] The memo documented a claim, not a conclusion. No declassified evidence has definitively established that Epstein formally served as an intelligence operative for any nation.[8]
The circumstantial pattern, however, is extensive. Epstein's COUQ Foundation donated $25,000 to Friends of Israeli Defence Forces and $15,000 to the Jewish National Fund.[6] His emails reveal efforts to leverage his relationship with Barak for access to the Israeli surveillance industry.[6] His social circle overlapped significantly with figures connected to intelligence work across multiple countries.[7]
The most consequential official finding came from the Department of Justice. A DOJ memo stated plainly: "no incriminating 'client list.' There was also no credible evidence found that Epstein blackmailed prominent individuals."[5]
This finding warrants careful parsing. The DOJ did not conclude that no misconduct occurred beyond what was already prosecuted. It concluded that investigators found no credible evidence of a blackmail operation. Whether that finding reflects the limits of the evidence, the limits of the investigation, or the actual absence of such an operation is a question the memo does not answer.
The DOJ concluded investigators found no credible evidence of a blackmail operation. Whether that reflects the limits of the evidence or the limits of the investigation is a question the memo does not answer.
What Is Known and What Is Not
The documented record establishes several facts beyond reasonable dispute. Ehud Barak maintained a sustained, multi-year relationship with Epstein that involved dozens of meetings, financial entanglements, and visits to multiple Epstein properties.[1][2] Robert Maxwell received a state-level funeral with intelligence chiefs in attendance and a eulogy referencing secret service to Israel.[4] An FBI source identified Epstein as a possible Mossad asset.[7] Israel reportedly provided security for Barak at Epstein's Manhattan apartment.[3]
What remains unproven is the central allegation: that Epstein operated a systematic intelligence-linked blackmail operation. The DOJ says it found no evidence of one.[5] No declassified government document from any country has confirmed Epstein as a formal intelligence asset. The claims of Ari Ben-Menashe regarding the Maxwell family's intelligence ties, while widely reported, come from a source whose credentials are disputed.
The gap between the documented facts and the unproven allegations is precisely where this story lives. The facts alone are extraordinary. A former Israeli prime minister maintained a close, ongoing relationship with a convicted sex offender. A British media baron was buried with intelligence honors on the Mount of Olives, and his daughter became that same sex offender's partner in crime. An FBI memo recorded suspicions of espionage. The official investigation found nothing further.
Whether that gap will ever be closed by evidence, rather than speculation, remains the open question.
